If you believe that breeding Yorkies is in your future, then there are several measures you must take to make sure your efforts will be successful. One small mishap could lead to puppies with many medical problems, which besides being sad for the puppies will also decrease their value.
There are many concerns that must be addressed when breeding Yorkies because each area is so very important. Genetically, you must be aware if your dog meets the standards and is a good representation; make sure that prior testing, such as bacteria cultures and brucellosis tests, are performed. You must spend the necessary time to learn about any and all undesirable hereditary traits. The possible problems could include luxating patellas, hypothroidism, cardiomyopathy, uterine inertia, prolapsed uterus, eclampsia, mastitus, metritis, and incorrect bites, toplines, or coats.
Another major factor to consider is that you could lose the female while she is trying to give birth if the pups are too big; there is a big expense involved if a C-section becomes necessary. You must also be aware that there may be a need to put down a pup due to birth defects, to avoid suffering, and this will also affect the mother. The terms fading puppy, septicemia, primary atelactasis, toxic milk, herpes virus, cleft palate, and hypoglycemia describe very real potential problems of which a breeder must be aware.
The time commitment necessary on the breeder’s part is also very demanding, and consideration for the dogs must be addressed. You must be willing to take all the steps necessary to secure a healthy puppy because their life depends on it.
