When breeding Yorkies, make sure you have extensive knowledge of the breed so that your pups will improve it. The female should be two years old and have a known pedigree and family background. Both the dogs in the breeding pair should be free from the common ailments that Yorkies often have. Make sure that both dogs are free of liver shunt problems, collapsed trachea problems, and luxated patellas.
There are some Yorkies that are oversized. The male Yorkie should not be bigger than confirmation. It is difficult for the mother to deliver large puppies. Once your happy couple has celebrated their nuptials, wait to see if she has conceived. After several weeks, take her to your vet and get him to do an ultrasound on her. Getting your first glimpse of your puppies is pure joy. The vet will tell you how many your dog is expecting. Normal gestation lasts 63 day or 9 weeks.
Prepare for the birthing by getting a whelping box ready. If you are handy with a hammer, you can put one together quickly. Just make it so there is no place for a puppy to get caught in it. Put it down over a piece of linoleum to protect your carpet or floor. Let the bitch get familiar with it as her due date approaches. You can place in it a hand crocheted or knitted blanket or old sweater. The puppies cannot suffocate in them. When the puppies are born even the male will be joyful, knowing they are his.
